After years of speculation and false starts, a sequel to the beloved 1985 film The Goonies is officially in development. Warner Bros. has confirmed that The Goonies 2 is underway, with several key figures from the original production returning to bring this new chapter to life.
Key Details:
- Screenplay: Potsy Ponciroli, known for his work on Old Henry, has been hired to pen the script for the sequel.
- Producers: Original writer Chris Columbus is set to write the story, with Steven Spielberg returning as a producer. Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario will also produce for Amblin Entertainment. Lauren Shuler Donner, widow of the original film’s director Richard Donner, will serve as executive producer.
- Original Cast: While no official casting announcements have been made, reports suggest that many original cast members, including Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, and Ke Huy Quan, are expected to reprise their roles.
Despite earlier denials from some cast members regarding the sequel’s existence, recent developments indicate that the project is moving forward. Martha Plimpton, who portrayed Stef in the original film, previously stated that reports of a sequel were “not real.” However, with official confirmations now in place, it appears that The Goonies 2 is finally becoming a reality.
As the project is in the early stages of development, no official release date has been announced. Fans of the original film can look forward to more updates as production progresses.
