Apple iPhone sales worldwide 2007-2020

In its 2020 fiscal year, Apple sold more than 917 million iPhones. After the release of the first-generation iPhone in 2007, the unit sales of the Apple mobile device saw rapid growth year after year, peaking at 231 million in 2018. iPhone sales have stayed relatively stable since then.

The newest models and iPhone’s lasting popularity

The iPhone now has ventured into the 13th generation and the iPhone 11 line and the iPhone 12 Pro Max (second-generation) are the newest additions to the family. The iPhone 11 series is the first generation of iPhones that tests water for the dual- and triple-lens camera and contains other advanced features such as the A14 Bionic chip. Such features also come with hefty price tags: the iPhone 11 Pro Max has a starting price of 1,099 U.S. dollars. The more wallet-friendly iPhone SE is Apple’s second attempt (the first one being the first-generation SE) to address the less-generous consumers. The success of these new products pushed up Apple’s sales in early 2020, while the newest smartphone vendor shipment data shows that their competitors like Huawei and Samsung suffered shipment decline due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

Success of Apple’s other products

Apart from the iPhone, which is Apple’s most profitable product, Apple is also the inventor of other heavy-weight players in the consumer electronics market. The Mac computer and the iPad, like the iPhone, are both pioneers in their respective markets and have helped popularize the use of PCs and tablets. The iPad is especially successful, having remained the largest vendor in the tablet market ever since its debut. The hottest new Apple gadget is undoubtedly the Apple Watch, which is a line of smartwatches that has fitness tracking capabilities and can be integrated via iOS with other Apple products and services. The Apple Watch has also been staying ahead of other smartwatch vendors since its initial release and secures around 50 percent of the market share as of the latest quarter.
