The shadows are stirring once again in the world of Tolkien. Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have officially greenlit “The Hunt for Gollum 2,” a sequel that promises to deepen the mystery, danger, and mythos behind one of Middle-earth’s most haunting characters.
Building on the events of the original The Hunt for Gollum — a surprise fan-favorite that dramatized Aragorn’s secret mission to track down Gollum before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring — this new chapter is poised to explore the untold history of Gollum’s exile, torture, and eventual corruption as he slips further into Sauron’s shadow.
While plot specifics are being kept tightly under wraps, early hints suggest that the story will span several regions of Middle-earth not yet fully explored in film — including Mirkwood’s eastern reaches, the Dead Marshes, and even the outskirts of Barad-dûr. The sequel is expected to introduce new allies and foes, deepening the political and spiritual stakes of the war for the Ring.
Andy Serkis, long associated with the character of Gollum, is rumored not only to return in performance but possibly to step behind the camera in a dual role as director. Serkis has said in past interviews that “there are still many layers of Gollum left unexplored — parts of his story that are tragic, terrifying, and strangely human.”
Though not yet confirmed, fans are hoping for a return of Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn in a cameo role — possibly framing the sequel with older Aragorn recounting the events, or mentoring a younger ranger during the mission.
Production is expected to begin in early 2026, with filming rumored to return to the sweeping landscapes of New Zealand. The release is planned for holiday 2027, placing it alongside some of the biggest upcoming fantasy releases of the decade.
As the shadow of the Ring looms ever larger, The Hunt for Gollum 2 is shaping up to be a bold, atmospheric return to the darker corners of Tolkien’s world — where loyalty is tested, darkness whispers, and even the smallest creature can change the fate of all.
